Rescue Dawn: The Facts

The movie, Rescue Dawn, will begin showing at select theaters in New York and Los Angeles on July 4th. The movie is vaguely based on the book, "Escape From Laos," written by Dieter Dengler. Dieter Dengler was a former POW who was imprisoned with Gene DeBruin. Rescue Dawn allegedly tells the true story of how Gene DeBruin and Dieter Dengler, along with 5 other POWs escaped from Ban Houei Het Pathet Lao Prison in June 1966.

Rescue Dawn includes a character named Gene DeBruin. However, this character is far from a true representation of the real Gene DeBruin. In fact, it is a severe and gross misrepresentation of the true Gene DeBruin that was imprisoned with Dieter Dengler, who is the main character in Rescue Dawn. The producer of Rescue Dawn, Werner Herzog, has taken significant liberties with the character representing Gene DeBruin - liberties that have completely fictionalized Gene and have the potential to seriously compromise Gene DeBruin's reputation.

We, as his family, wish to provide you with the facts regarding Gene DeBruin and the movie Rescue Dawn. We wish for you to understand the real Gene DeBruin before you choose to buy your movie ticket for Rescue Dawn.

Werner Herzog has the freedom to tell the story as he sees it. However, so does the Gene DeBruin Family. Please read on to learn more about Gene DeBruin and the movie Rescue Dawn. Then, make an educated - and well informed - choice about whether or not to spend your money on the movie Rescue Dawn.
